Whether you're just starting out or already managing a growing catalog, getting familiar with Shopify’s product management tools is key to keeping your store running smoothly. Here’s a full breakdown - from adding new products to organizing, editing, and even removing them when needed.
Adding a new product
You can add products directly from your desktop or the Shopify mobile app:
-
Desktop: Go to Products > Add product, then fill in the details (title, price, images, etc.) and click Save.
-
iPhone/Android: Go to Products > + > Add product, add your info, and tap Save (✓ on Android).
📌 If your store has over 50 locations, save the product first before assigning inventory.
Duplicating a product
Want to save time? Duplicate an existing product and tweak the details.
-
You can copy the title, description, images, price, and more.
-
Set the duplicate as Draft or Active.
-
Adjust publishing settings before making it live on your sales channels.
📌 This is also available on both mobile and desktop - just tap or click Duplicate from the product page.
Editing product info
Updating price, description, variants, or availability? Easy.
-
From Products, click or tap the item, make changes, and save.
-
Use the bulk editor to update several products at once.
Changes take effect immediately in your store, so double-check before saving.
Previewing a product
Want to see how your product looks in your online store?
-
On desktop: Open the product and click Preview.
-
On mobile: Tap the product, then tap ... > View on Online Store.
Organizing products with tags & channels
-
Tags help customers find products through your store's search. Add up to 250 tags per product (Shopify Plus allows unlimited). Use commas to separate them.
-
Sales Channels control where your product appears (Online Store, POS, etc.). You can easily toggle availability based on season, stock, or exclusivity.
You can also manage both using bulk actions for faster setup.
Customize with metafields
Need to store product-specific details like size guides, care instructions, or files?
Use metafields to save extra product info. If you use an Online Store 2.0 theme, you can even connect metafields to your storefront design using the theme editor - no coding needed.
Improve search engine listings (SEO)
Shopify lets you customize how your products appear in search engine results:
-
Page Title (max ~70 characters)
-
Meta Description (max ~320 characters)
-
URL Handle - keep it short and relevant (avoid frequent changes)
From the product page, scroll to the Search engine listing and click the pencil icon to edit.
Scan barcodes with your phone
Need to add a barcode? You can scan it directly from your phone using the Shopify app.
- Tap into a product, go to the Inventory section, and hit the barcode icon to scan using your device’s camera. The app will prompt you to accept permissions to use the camera.
Archiving or deleting products
-
Archive: Hides the product from your store without deleting it. Perfect for temporary removals.
-
Delete: Permanently removes the product (cannot be undone).
📌 Use the Archived tab in your Products dashboard to review or unarchive products later.
Helpful tools that bring more out of your products
Once your products are set up, there are a few powerful tools that can help improve how customers interact with them - from discovering more items to checking out faster.
-
Frequently Bought Together
This app displays personalized bundles directly on product pages, making it easier for shoppers to discover complementary items — and often, they do add more to the cart. -
Also Bought
Based on real customer behavior, this app recommends related products that feel natural to explore. It works quietly in the background, using data to improve the shopping journey. -
Add to Cart Anywhere
This one simplifies the browsing experience by letting customers add products to their cart from the home page, search results, product pages, collection pages, and cart page sections - no need to visit individual product pages.
These apps build on top of the product foundation you create. A well-organized catalog with clear titles, tags, and descriptions gives them more to work with - and helps them perform even better.
